Filler or biostimulator? It depends on the job.

"Should I get filler or Sculptra?" is one of the most common questions we hear. The honest answer is that they aren't competitors — they do different jobs. Understanding the difference makes it much easier to plan a result that looks natural now and keeps looking natural later.

Two different jobs

Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers add volume and structure where they're placed. The change is visible right away, which makes them ideal for defined areas: lips, cheeks, chin, nasolabial folds and under-eye hollows. Another advantage: HA fillers can be dissolved if ever needed.

Biostimulators work differently. Instead of filling, they encourage your own skin to produce collagen over time. At Essenza we use two:

  • Sculptra (poly-L-lactic acid), which builds gradual, diffuse support and is usually planned as a short series of sessions.
  • Radiesse (calcium hydroxylapatite), which can provide some immediate support and also stimulates collagen. Hyperdilute Radiesse is often used to improve skin quality and firmness.

When filler makes sense

Filler is usually our first thought when there's a specific area to shape or restore — thin lips, a flat cheek, a recessed chin, a deep fold. Because results are immediate, it's also helpful when you have a timeline in mind. Think of it as precise, targeted architecture.

When a biostimulator makes sense

Biostimulators shine when the concern is broader: skin that feels thinner, mild laxity, or volume that has softened gradually across the face. Results develop over weeks to months as collagen builds, which many clients love — the change is so gradual that people notice you look rested, not "done."

Filler shapes. Biostimulators support. Many of the most natural results use a little of both, in the right order.

Sometimes the answer is both

Faces don't age in just one way, so plans often combine tools. A biostimulator might improve overall support and skin quality while a small amount of filler refines one feature. This is the idea behind facial balancing: looking at your whole face, not a single area in isolation.

How we decide, together

Your consultation covers your goals, your timeline, your anatomy, your budget and how you feel about gradual versus immediate change. For reference, starting prices at Essenza include filler from $550 per area, Sculptra at $650 per vial and hyperdilute Radiesse at $600 — your plan, and its cost, are confirmed before any treatment.

Questions we hear often

Which lasts longer, filler or a biostimulator?

It depends on the product, the area and the person. HA fillers commonly last several months to over a year. Collagen built with biostimulators tends to last longer, often well over a year. We'll give you realistic expectations for your plan.

Can filler be reversed?

Hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved with an enzyme if needed. Biostimulators can't be dissolved, which is one reason careful planning matters.

Will a biostimulator look natural?

Because results build gradually, biostimulators are known for a subtle, natural-looking change. A natural result always comes down to planning and conservative technique.
